Lai Khaen: Bond

Documentary

An exploration of the inner resonance within individuals traced through the melodies of the Khaen. At the heart of this journey is Sombat Simla, a legendary blind Khaen master who serves as the pivotal link between people, memories, and human relationships.

This documentary is an intimate observation of the endurance of sound and memory echoing within. It explores how these elements continue to connect people, emotions, and the unseen threads of existence.

Director's Note:

While working on the Lai Khaen Project, which explores the sound of the Khaen today, the initial goal was to create a 4-part documentary series called Lai Khaen: Echoes of the Bond. I spent several months in the field following people whose lives are deeply connected to the Khaen. The recorded footage included parts that were used and parts that were never told. When I looked back at everything, I felt there were still certain emotions I wanted to share.

Lai Khaen: Bond was therefore born out of an intention to tell the same story in another way. It reduces information and explanations, allowing the atmosphere, rhythm, and relationships of the people to slowly guide the audience into the story. This opens up a space for people to connect more with the sound and their own experiences.
